History of the Rho Chi Society

In 1908, the "Aristolochite Society", a local honor society, was created on the campus of the University of Michigan. This society later became known as the "Rho Chi Society", and was granted a charter by the State of Michigan on May 19,1922.

After five years of existence, Rho Chi had eight chapters, and after ten years there were eighteen active chapters. The Alpha Nu chapter, of the Rho Chi Society, was founded at the University of Tennessee in 1949. In 1999, there were seventy-five active chapters and additional chapters are anticipated at new schools of pharmacy.

The high standards maintained for membership in Rho Chi have resulted in the general recognition of the Society not only by Pharmacy, but also by academic circles generally. Rho Chi is accorded a place in Banta’s Greek Exchange and a sketch of the Society appears in Baird’s Manual. Since 1947 the Society has been a member of the Association of College Honor Societies.

The Mission of the Rho Chi Society

The Rho Chi Society, Pharmacy’s academic honor society, encourages and recognizes excellence in intellectual achievement and fosters fellowship among its members. Further, the Society encourages high standards of conduct and character, and advocates critical inquiry in all aspects of pharmacy.

The Rho Chi Society will achieve universal recognition of its members as lifelong intellectual leaders in pharmacy. As a community of scholars, the Society will instill the desire to pursue intellectual excellence and critical inquiry to advance the profession.

What is Rho Chi?

Rho Chi is the national honor society for the pharmacy profession.  The top 15% of each class is accepted after completion of 3 semesters, and an additional 5% after the 5th semester.

Programs Offered By The Alpha Nu Chapter

Rho Chi Used Book Sale

Each year at the beginning of the fall semester, Rho Chi sponsors a used book sale to help incoming students defer the high cost of textbooks.  On the Rho Chi bulletin board there will be a list of students, what books they have for sale, and their phone numbers where they can be contacted.

“Rx for Success” Study Skills Workshop

Each fall before the first round of exams, Rho Chi sponsors a study skills workshop for P-1's.  This is a forum for upperclassmen who have had success in particular classes to give detailed study tips for each class and professor.

              Tutoring Program

Rho Chi offers a tutoring program for those students experiencing academic distress.  Please contact the SASS for further details.
